Tired but glad
So it’s the end of the day!! There’s this one song that’s
stuck in my head – the one where the violin comes in, right as Hades and
Persephone say things. It’s so beautiful, and I am absolutely sure this
particular sequence of notes have been used before – I don’t know where though
(see, this is where a musical search engine would be so handy! I love these very specific sounds, like in (Jealous,
Ingrid Michaelson)
Somehow, Hadestown seems keyed to my soul (or heart?), especially
when I read the plot to be able to sing the songs in context. Yvonne was
totally right, I unwittingly was listening to the Original Cast Recording the
whole time, where Hermes is a black guy and has an oak-ey (idk if this is a
good description??), slightly raspy voice, and this. Was. Perfect. for what he
has to say. When I listened to the Broadway version it was a bit of a jarring
experience, like you come back to dishes in a restaurant that you’ve had before
(in your childhood, perhaps?) and they’re a bit different.
